Ways to Help

 The initiative aims to prioritize addiction treatment and support services over punitive measures, providing individuals with access to treatment programs funded by the state's marijuana tax revenue and savings from reduced incarceration costs. The goal is to address drug addiction as a public health issue rather than a criminal one, offering individuals struggling with substance abuse a pathway to recovery and support. Measure 110 is a drug decriminalization and addiction treatment initiative that was passed by Oregon voters in November 2020. Under Measure 110, the possession of small amounts of certain drugs, including cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, LSD, and MDMA, has been reclassified from a criminal offense to a civil violation. Instead of facing arrest and criminal charges, individuals caught with these small amounts of drugs are now subject to a fine or can choose to attend a health assessment. 

On the other hand, peer support specialists are individuals with lived experience in recovery from substance abuse or mental health challenges. They undergo specialized training to provide support, guidance, and empathy to others going through similar struggles. Peer support specialists play a crucial role in supporting individuals on their journey to recovery, offering encouragement, practical assistance, and hope. Their firsthand experience and understanding of the recovery process enable them to establish a strong rapport with those they support, helping to reduce stigma and create a safe environment for open communication. In the context of Measure 110, peer support specialists are likely to be an essential part of the addiction treatment services provided to individuals who choose the health assessment option after the decriminalization of drug possession. They can offer valuable assistance in navigating the recovery process and connecting individuals to the appropriate treatment and support resources.

Inclement Weather Hotel-Sheltering is a program or initiative implemented by local state funding and/or nonprofit organizations in response to severe weather conditions. The fund aims to provide temporary shelter and accommodations for individuals experiencing homelessness during extreme weather events, such as severe cold, heavy snow, or heatwaves. This program typically operates during specific weather conditions that pose a threat to the health and safety of people living on the streets or in inadequate shelter situations.

The Inclement Weather Hotel-Sheltering Fund allows homeless individuals to access temporary shelter in hotels or motels during these hazardous weather periods, ensuring they have a safe and warm place to stay until the extreme weather conditions subside. The project aims to empower incarcerated youth with tools and resources to break the cycle of criminal behavior and create a positive impact on their lives.

Project HOPE seeks to address the unique needs of young people in the justice system, offering life skills development, and mentorship programs.

Beyond the prison walls, Project HOPE focuses on creating opportunities for these youth to thrive after release. This may involve support, community reintegration programs, and continued access to essential services to help them rebuild their lives.

The initiative often involves collaboration between various stakeholders, including Samaritan Health Services, nonprofit organizations and community leaders. The goal is to create a supportive and holistic approach to address the challenges faced by incarcerated youth and empower them to make positive choices for their future.
